John 15:11
11 I have told you these things, that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy and gladness may be of full measure and complete and overflowing.
Devotion
We often treat joy like a volatile commodity. We chase it through achievements, smooth circumstances, comfort, or the approval of others. But treating joy this way is like trying to catch rainwater in a cup with a hole in the bottom—no matter how much we pour in, it eventually leaks out, leaving us dry and searching for the next refresh.
In John 15, Jesus spent considerable time giving His disciples heavy, serious instructions. He talked about vines, branches, strict obedience, and the painful but necessary process of pruning. It would have been easy for the disciples to hear these teachings and feel overwhelmed by a long checklist of spiritual demands. But right in the middle of the conversation, Jesus pauses to reveal His true motive: He wants us to be filled to the brim with joy.
Jesus redefines what joy actually is. True joy isn't something we manufacture by trying harder or arranging our circumstances perfectly. It is a byproduct of connection. Jesus says, "that my joy may be in you." He isn't offering a cheap, fragile human happiness that breaks the moment life gets difficult. He is offering His very own divine joy—the same unbreakable, resilient joy that sustained Him in perfect fellowship with the Father, even as He walked toward the cross.
When we abide in Christ—making our home in His love, trusting His word, and surrendering to His pruning—His life flows into ours. Our joy shifts from being situational to being relational. Your cup stops leaking because it is plugged directly into a limitless, overflowing reservoir. Following Jesus isn't a duty that drains your life; it is an invitation to stay attached to the only Source capable of making your joy completely full.
Prayer Point
“Jesus, thank You that Your ultimate desire for me is complete, overflowing joy. Forgive me for the times I look for satisfaction in temporary things that always leave me running dry. Today, I choose to stop striving and simply abide in You. Let Your resilient, unshakeable joy fill my heart and mind. Even in the middle of challenges or seasons of pruning, help me remember that my life is safely anchored in Yours. May my life overflow with Your goodness today. Amen.”
The Daily 10-Minute 'Abide in Me' Rhythm
Commit to establishing this strategic baseline rhythm together as a family every day:
Be Still (~2 Min): Take a moment to quiet your thoughts and still your mind. Silence your devices and allow yourself to pause, embracing the awe of God's majesty. It's a chance to breathe, reflect, and connect with Him.
Truth Affirmation (~5 Min): Read the scripture assigned for today. As you reflect on it, gently say aloud: 'Jesus, You are the Vine, and I am a branch. In this moment, I choose to embrace where You have placed me, trusting in Your guidance and care.'
Prayer (~3 Min): Do not burden yourself with a stressful checklist. Instead, take a moment to commit your day to the Holy Spirit. Trust in His gentle guidance; He will lead you in a way that feels reassuring. You're not alone in this journey.
