Day 31: Freedom from the Power of Sin

Romans 6:11-14

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Devotion

Imagine a citizen moving from a country ruled by a harsh tyrant to a land governed by a good, loving king. The old tyrant no longer has any legal authority over that person. If the tyrant barks an order across the border, the citizen is legally free to ignore it. The old master's power is broken.

Paul uses this exact shift in authority to describe our new reality in Christ. Verse 11 starts with a practical command: count yourselves dead to sin. The word "count" (or reckon) is an accounting term. It means to look at the facts and settle the books. The spiritual fact is that through Jesus' death and resurrection, your old connection to sin has been cleanly severed.

Because your citizenship has changed, verses 12 and 13 challenge you to stop taking orders from the old ruler. Paul warns against letting sin "reign" or treating your body as an "instrument of wickedness." The word used for instrument (hóplon) actually refers to a weapon of war. When we slide into old, destructive habits or harbor unloving attitudes, we are handing weapons back to an enemy who has already been defeated.

Instead, we are called to actively offer ourselves to God as instruments of righteousness—wielding the tools and weapons used for His good purposes. You don't have to struggle to avoid sin. You simply have to remember whose kingdom you belong to. Sin is no longer your boss; you are living under the secure, empowering banner of God's grace.

Prayer Point

"Father, thank You for breaking the power of sin in my life and bringing me from death to absolute life. Today, I settle the ledger in my mind: I am dead to the old ways and alive to You through Jesus. I refuse to let old habits or destructive thoughts rule over me. Use every part of me as an instrument of Your grace and righteousness today. I declare that sin has no reign over my mind, words, or choices today."

The Daily 10-Minute 'Abide in Me' Rhythm

Commit to establishing this strategic baseline rhythm together as a family every day:

Be Still (~2 Min): Take a moment to quiet your thoughts and still your mind. Silence your devices and allow yourself to pause, embracing the awe of God's majesty. It's a chance to breathe, reflect, and connect with Him.

Truth Affirmation (~5 Min): Read the scripture assigned for today. As you reflect on it, gently say aloud: 'Jesus, You are the Vine, and I am a branch. In this moment, I choose to embrace where You have placed me, trusting in Your guidance and care.'

Prayer (~3 Min): Do not burden yourself with a stressful checklist. Instead, take a moment to commit your day to the Holy Spirit. Trust in His gentle guidance; He will lead you in a way that feels reassuring. You're not alone in this journey.
