Day 32: Choosing to Abide

1 John 3:5-6

5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Devotion

When a train changes tracks, it doesn't instantly jump to a new destination, but its entire trajectory shifts. This is the picture John paints when he describes what it means to truly know Jesus.

In verse 5, scripture establishes a foundational truth: Jesus came with a clear mission—to take away our sins. Because He is completely sinless, He doesn't just look past our failures; He removes them. But verse 6 confronts us with a challenging reality. John writes that no one who "lives in him" or "abides in him" can comfortably maintain a lifestyle of habitual, unrepentant sin.

To choose to "abide in Him" means to make our home in His presence. When we live in a clean house, we notice things that are not in order or are dirty. When we abide in Christ, we become increasingly uncomfortable with the things that break His heart. A lifestyle of continuous, intentional sin suggests we are still driving down the old tracks, missing out on the transformative power of really knowing Him.

Following Jesus doesn't mean you will never make a mistake. It means that when you do, you don't pitch a tent and stay there. You turn back to the One who took your sin away, receive His grace, and keep walking in His light.

Prayer Point

"Jesus, thank You for coming to take away my sins and for offering me a completely fresh start. I don't want to just know about You; I want to live in You. Search my heart today. Reveal any hidden patterns, habits, or attitudes that are pulling me away from Your presence. Give me the grace and courage to turn away from those things and to find my true home, security, and strength in You alone."

The Daily 10-Minute 'Abide in Me' Rhythm

Commit to establishing this strategic baseline rhythm together as a family every day:

Be Still (~2 Min): Take a moment to quiet your thoughts and still your mind. Silence your devices and allow yourself to pause, embracing the awe of God's majesty. It's a chance to breathe, reflect, and connect with Him.

Truth Affirmation (~5 Min): Read the scripture assigned for today. As you reflect on it, gently say aloud: 'Jesus, You are the Vine, and I am a branch. In this moment, I choose to embrace where You have placed me, trusting in Your guidance and care.'

Prayer (~3 Min): Do not burden yourself with a stressful checklist. Instead, take a moment to commit your day to the Holy Spirit. Trust in His gentle guidance; He will lead you in a way that feels reassuring. You're not alone in this journey.
