Day 5: Radical Dependence on Christ

Galatians 2:20

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Devotion

Fasting is more than just a physical challenge or skipping a few meals; it is a physical billboard of a deep spiritual reality. When you choose to fast, your body feels empty, and it starts to complain. In those moments of hunger, you are actively telling your physical desires, "You are not in charge anymore." It is a tangible way of stepping back so that Jesus can step forward.

Paul uses radical language here. He says your old, self-reliant ego—the version of you that experiences performance anxiety, tries to use independent logic to solve everything, and constantly chases worldly validation—was pinned to the cross with Jesus. It’s dead. Now, the Christian life isn't about you trying hard to copy Jesus. It’s about Jesus actually living His life through your body.

When you fast and pray, you are putting this verse into action. You stop feeding your old self and start fueling your life-union with Him. You don't have to stress about finding the willpower to be holy, disciplined, or strong during this fast. Instead, you operate by faith, trusting that the Son of God—who loves you unconditionally—is doing the heavy lifting from the inside out. Let your physical hunger drive you straight to prayer, reminding you that your old life is gone, and Christ is fully alive in you today.

The Daily 10-Minute 'Abide in Me' Rhythm

Commit to establishing this strategic baseline rhythm together as a family every day:

Be Still (~2 Min): Take a moment to quiet your thoughts and still your mind. Silence your devices and allow yourself to pause, embracing the awe of God's majesty. It's a chance to breathe, reflect, and connect with Him.

Truth Affirmation (~5 Min): Read the scripture assigned for today. As you reflect on it, gently say aloud: 'Jesus, You are the Vine, and I am a branch. In this moment, I choose to embrace where You have placed me, trusting in Your guidance and care.'

Prayer (~3 Min): Do not burden yourself with a stressful checklist. Instead, take a moment to commit your day to the Holy Spirit. Trust in His gentle guidance; He will lead you in a way that feels reassuring. You're not alone in this journey.
